Indigenous Queenslanders urged to speak up

Queensland’s independent health watchdog is urging Indigenous Queenslanders to speak up about the safety and quality of their healthcare. Less than two per cent of complaints and enquiries to the Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC) were made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people this year. CEO Cheryl Herbert said Indigenous Queenslanders are under-represented in the HQCC’s complaints data.

Annual health check shows room for improvement

The number of Queensland hospitals aligning with all nine key patient safety indicators has more than doubled, a new report from the independent health watchdog shows. The Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC) Annual health check tracks how the safety and quality of healthcare improved in the state’s 226 acute hospitals and day surgeries, both public and private, over the 12 months to December 2008.

Watchdog visits Rockhampton

Achieving a healthy future for Rockhampton will be at the top of the agenda when the state’s health watchdog meets with key healthcare providers and consumers this week. As part of its ongoing program of regional visits, the Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC) is in Rockhampton tomorrow to meet with frontline healthcare workers and practice managers, as well as carers and patients.

Joint complaint website launched

Independent accountability agencies in Queensland have joined forces to help the thousands of Queenslanders annually who seek free, impartial advice to resolve complaints about a range of issues. The agencies have established a shared complaints website www.complaints.qld.gov.au and an ‘It’s OK to complain’ brochure that has been translated into 15 languages.

Saunders investigation complete

An independent Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC) investigation into the death of two-year-old Ryan Saunders has been finalised. The Emerald toddler died at Rockhampton Hospital on 26 September 2007 after a five-day illness which was not diagnosed in life.

Watchdog releases Bundaberg report

Queensland’s independent health watchdog today released its report into concerns about the credentialling of doctors at Bundaberg Base Hospital. The report was prompted by inconsistencies between Queensland Health audits and data reported by the regional hospital to the Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC).

Standards of care welcomed

The standards of care for over 3000 Australians living with the nation’s most common life-threatening genetic disorder, cystic fibrosis (CF), have recently been addressed in Australia. Better reporting leads to better care

The release of hospital safety data shows that the lessons of Bundaberg have carried through, Health Quality and Complaints Commission CEO Cheryl Herbert says. “These figures show us that adverse incidents within our hospitals are now being reported in greater numbers. This is a great turnaround. We know from the investigations into Bundaberg that this was not happening a few years ago and that there was a perception that errors were covered up.
