National Registration and Accreditation Scheme

The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme will create a single national registration and accreditation system for 10 health professions: chiropractors; dentists (including dental hygienists, dental prosthetists and dental therapists); medical practitioners; nurses and midwives; optometrists; osteopaths; pharmacists; physiotherapists; podiatrists; and psychologists.

The new arrangement aims to help healthcare professionals move around the country more easily, reduce red tape, provide greater safeguards for the public and promote a more flexible, responsive and sustainable health workforce.

The Health Quality and Complaints Commission has made a number of submissions on the proposed changes:

Healthcare identifiers and privacy legislation

In 2006, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a national approach to developing, implementing and operating systems for individual and healthcare provider identifiers as part of accelerating work on electronic health records to improve the safety of patients and improve efficiency for healthcare providers.

A discussion paper was released Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council in July 2009. Download our submission.
