Health Community Councils

Queensland’s 36 Health Community Councils (HCCs) were established in 2007 to foster community engagement, educate communities about the health system and monitor the safety and quality of public health services.

They provide a two-way link between Queensland Health and local communities.

HCC functions include:

  • gathering feedback from healthcare consumers
  • facilitating community debate and feedback, and advocating for healthcare consumers
  • enhancing community education about the delivery of health services
  • considering and evaluating reports about the delivery of health services, and considering planning proposals
  • advising and making recommendations to Queensland Health, and reporting to the Minister for Health on an annual basis.

As an independent body, the Health Quality and Complaints Commission manages recruitment drives for council membership twice a year. Appointments are made by the Minister for Health.
