Our responsibilities
As Queensland’s independent health watchdog, we have unique powers to improve the safety and quality of health services.
Firstly, we are an independent organisation and not part of Queensland Health.
Secondly, we have jurisdiction over all health services, both public and private.
Thirdly, our independent powers are backed by law.
Under the Health Quality and Complaints Commission Act 2006, we are empowered to act independently, impartially and in the public interest. We observe natural justice and act as quickly, and with as little formality, as practicable.
We are responsible for:
- monitoring, reviewing and reporting on the quality of health services
- recommending action to improve the quality of health services
- receiving and managing health complaints
- helping healthcare consumers and providers resolve health complaints
- preserving and promoting health rights.
The Act also sets out our jurisdiction - that is, who we work with. This includes any kind of healthcare provider in Queensland, from hospitals to general practitioners, or physiotherapists to alternative healthcare providers, such as naturopaths or acupuncturists.
However, some areas of the health industry do fall outside our jurisdiction.
